Cath Laffan has been a teacher and lecturer within Art and Design, specialising in metalwork and jewellery design and making for over 23 years. During this time she has designed, delivered and assessed courses running from GCSEs to degrees. In tandem with her teaching, Cath has maintained her own practice as a designer maker, operating on a commission and speculative basis, showing her work nationally in a range of galleries and exhibitions. She is also a founding director of the iO gallery in Sydney Street, Brighton, showing artists and designer makers since 1997.

"Working mainly with non-precious materials, jewellery can move beyond fiscal worth and be more of a discussion of an individual's ideas, how they feel, what they want to express. Using recycled, sometimes 'throw away' materials and elevating these material's perception of worth is not a new idea but rather one that needs constant referrence in order to keep it fresh for each new audience. What is precious to the individual engaing with this jewellery is not the fiscal worth of the material but rather the idea behind its existence. The individual wearing this jewellery wants the audience to know that they actively think and engage in a deeper conversation with what is essentially decorating their bodies."
